GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After a long, cold winter, the odd/even parking rules in the city will soon be done for another year.  But this was also the first year Grand Rapids tried something different on more than a dozen streets: same-side parking restrictions.

"Moving it to one side was a success for the city," said Public Services Director, James Hurt. City officials said you can expect more same side rules in the future, as GR plans to expand the program.

Same-side parking was introduced on 19 different streets, mainly to make it easier for police, fire, and snow plows to get through narrow city streets.

Hurt believes it also helped with the flow of residential traffic, and residents we spoke with agree.

The city plans on expanding the program for next year, adding more streets to the already growing list of requests for the addition of this parking restriction.

"I suspect we may get more requests going forward -- so each street will be looked at to see if it meets the criteria," said Hurt.

If you're interested in same-side parking or having the city evaluate your street, you can call the Traffic Safety Department at 616-456-3066.
