MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — A man with several warrants is now behind bars after being caught by the very trooper he had reportedly taunted about not being able to catch him.

Troopers received information Thursday that a 32-year-old man from Sears, MI with several outstanding warrants was with his broken down car on the side of a local road.  After responding to the area, the man’s vehicle was found abandoned.  A phone number was located for the suspect and the trooper spoke with the man in an attempt to get him to turn himself in.

The 32-year-old suspect reportedly said he was aware of his warrants and  told the trooper “you will not catch me”.

Fast-forward to the next day- the same trooper was on patrol and saw the suspect’s vehicle pass him on M-61 with an equipment violation.  After pulling the vehicle over, the man fled on foot into a wooded area.

In the process of searching for the man, it was learned that he may be at the home of an ex-girlfriend.  Troopers responded to the residence but nobody would answer the door.  Troopers eventually made contact with the homeowner, her telling them that the suspect had just called her from inside her home, and that he had no permission to be there.  She was able to come to the residence and give permission for police to search her home.

Once inside, a state police K9 team located the suspect hiding in a bathroom cabinet.

After being taken into custody, the suspect reportedly told police he knew they were outside but “just thought you would go away”.

The suspect is currently in custody with formal charges pending.
