PORTAGE, Mich. -- Officers had to fish a teenage suspect out of a retention pond, after he led police on a chase and wrecked his dirt bike in the pond, police say.
It all started on Wednesday night at around 11:30 p.m. when police saw a guy on a dirt bike riding recklessly: jumping curbs and going through the front yards of businesses along Portage Road.
Officers tried to stop him, but the suspect hid behind a business. Police remained in the area and spotted him as he tried to leave.
That started a chase, and the suspect attempted to lose officers by cutting through a corn field. He ended up back in town, and the pursuit resumed.
The guy on the dirt bike once again attempted to go off-road but mistakenly rode straight into a retention pond behind Summit Polymers off Sprinkle Road. A pursuing officer nearly made the same mistake but managed to stop just short of the water.
The 16-year-old suspect swam to officers and was arrested without further incident. He was taken to a juvenile holding facility and is expected to face felony charges.
