SIDNEY TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The 80-year-old Montcalm County man found dead in his home last week died from an apparent gunshot wound, according to Michigan State Police investigators.

Alan ‘Dale’ Nelson was found inside his home last Monday, March 30 in the 500 block of Nelson Drive in Sidney Township. He was killed during an apparent home invasion.

Police would not say how many times Nelson had been shot or whether he was shot by his own gun or with a gun reported missing following other recent burglaries in the same area.

Nelson’s family told FOX 17 the neighborhood has been completely raddled by the incident. Neighbors have also reinstated a watch group following Nelson’s death.

Michigan State Police has announced a $1,000 dollar reward through Crime Stoppers for any information leading to an arrest.

The family remains hopeful that whoever broke into their father’s home and took his life will be held accountable.  They also urge anyone with information to come forward.

Detectives are asking the public for continued assistance with helping solve these crimes, asking anyone with information to contact the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post at 989-352-844 or Silent Observer at 1-866-774-2345.
