COLDWATER, Mich. — A mother was hospitalized Friday with a closed head injury involving possible bleeding on the brain following an attack by her daughter’s boyfriend, police say.

Randy Regan Jr., 23, is currently being held in the Branch County Jail on charges of aggravated assault less than murder and domestic violence stemming from an incident at a Coldwater home early Friday morning.

An officer with the Quincy Police Department was called just before 1:00 a.m. to a home where Regan resided with his girlfriend and her mother.

The girlfriend told police Regan returned home from the bar and threatened her while she was in bed, then punched her.  She also told police she called for help, and her mother came to her aid as Regan allegedly threw his girlfriend to the ground and threatened to kill them both.

A physical altercation involving the mother ensued where the mother ended up on the ground and Regan allegedly kicked her in the head, according to police.

The mother was transferred to Bronson Hospital for treatment after suffering serious injuries from the attack. The girlfriend was treated at the Community Health Center for injuries to her head, eye and face.

The attack on the two women apparently ended when the mother’s 17-year-old son returned home with some friends.  The son grabbed a baseball bat, and Regan ran off, say police.

Regan was taken into custody about an hour after the alleged incident after police found him at a nearby apartment complex, police say.  Regan apparently told police he had been assaulted at the home himself and didn’t want to press charges.

Regan suffered injuries to his face following his arrest after he slammed his head into the plexiglass window in the rear seat of the patrol vehicle he was placed in, police say. He was treated at the Branch County Community Health Center emergency room prior to his jail booking but refused to shower and clean the blood from his face until just before his video arraignment on Friday afternoon.

During the arraignment, a judge set Regan’s bond at $100,000, and Regan asked the judge about the possibility of pleading insanity, allegedly claiming he was bipolar.  The  judge entered a not guilty plea on Regan’s behalf and is working to set a pretrial conference, police said.

Police say Regan has a history of domestic violence incidents tied to his record.
