WEST MICHIGAN — This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in West Michigan, a week filled with education and awareness to prepare us as we enter into the severe weather season.

In coordination with Severe Weather Awareness Week, the National Weather Service will hold a tornado drill at 2 p.m. Thursday. Shortly after 2 p.m., the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids will issue a practice Tornado Warning. At that time, severe weather sirens will sound across the area.

There is NO severe weather expected today, even though skies will be dark, and showers will be moving through the area.

The tornado drill is a perfect time to go over severe weather plans, whether it be at home or at the office.

We are no strangers to severe weather here in West Michigan, and as we very well know after last year, severe weather can strike at any time and with little notice, so it is important to have a plan in place.

If you would like to know more about Severe Weather Awareness Week or how to prepare for it, the National Weather Service has plenty of resources: http://www.weather.gov/dtx/svraware.
