KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A Kalamazoo man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole Monday after being convicted of killing his 2-year-old son.

Brian Roberts was found guilty earlier this month of three murder and child abuse charges in the death of Nehemiah “Nemo” Dodd.

Family members have told FOX 17 NEWS that he’d taken custody of the toddler just weeks before the child’s death.

On New Year’s Eve 2013, Dodd was taken to the hospital after police found him unresponsive at his father’s home on Frank Street in Kalamazoo. Police said Roberts told them Nemo was knocked out after falling down the stairs.  He died a few days later at the hospital.  The autopsy showed evidence of child abuse.

Roberts was arrested on murder charges and was convicted in a jury trial earlier this month.

According to police, Roberts has past arrests for criminal sexual conduct and domestic violence charges.
