MUSKEGON, Mich. — The 26-year-old man accused of murdering his grandfather with a hatchet will represent himself at his murder trial, according to the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office.
Trent Humphreys-McPherson fired his public defender, and Judge Timothy Hicks granted his motion to represent himself during a hearing Wednesday in Muskegon County Circuit Court, officials with the prosecutor’s office said.
Humphreys-McPherson is charged with open murder in the Jan. 9 death of his grandfather, 71-year-old Dennis McPherson. Officials with the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office say he killed his grandpa after a dispute about money.
Humphreys-McPherson’s girlfriend, Kerri Sue Crawford, is also facing charges in this case. She’s charged with being an accessory after the fact to a felony and lying to police.
No trial date has been announced.
