GRIFFINVILLE, Mich. — Technically, that dateline is accurate.

The city council of Rockford, Michigan has unanimously voted to change the city’s name to “Griffinville” during the Grand Rapids Griffins’ series with the Rockford (Illinois) IceHogs in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

“Given the high stakes of the Calder Cup Playoffs and our city’s ardent support of the Griffins, the last thing we want is for anyone to confuse us with our namesake in Illinois, or to think that we have any residual affinity for anything from there, including the IceHogs,” Griffinville City Manager Michael Young wrote in a release Tuesday afternoon.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven series starts Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Van Andel Arena.
