MUSKEGON, Mich. --   The South Pierhead Light in Muskegon is making maritime history as it opened it's doors to the public for the first time Saturday afternoon.  The landmark is just one of many lighthouses along the lake shore but for a handful of reasons, it stands out.

The lantern room on top of the light is from another lighthouse built back in the 1870's.  Back when these structures had keepers, a female was assigned to the South Pierhead Light... something that was rare during that time.  This landmark has been a gem in the Muskegon community for over a century, dating all the way back to 1903.

If you're looking for something to do as the weather continues to get nicer, this is the perfect family activity.  The light is open Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday until Labor Day.  Tickets are $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children.
