KENTWOOD – Officers with the Kentwood Police Department were called to a community pool at the Wingate Apartment complex late Sunday for what witnesses say was a child who was pulled from a pool unresponsive.

A press release issued early Monday morning explains a 5-year-old boy was pulled from the pool by a resident after both he and his 9-year-old brother snuck into the pool area.

Police say the pool was closed at the time of the incident, and the community building and the gate to the pool area were locked.

The emergency response happened in the 3000 block of Wingate Drive just after 7:00 p.m.

A witness we spoke to near the apartments tells FOX17 first responders were conducting CPR on a child at the scene, who was later rushed to the hospital.

As of early Monday morning, the child is listed in critical condition at the hospital.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Kentwood Police Department at 698-6580 or Silent Observer.
