DEVINE, Texas — Alyssa Ramirez, 18, was Devine High School’s homecoming queen, a cheerleader, a tennis player, and a member of the volleyball team. On her way home from prom, she was swept away by raging flood waters. Just hours before her death, Alyssa was attending her senior prom. On her way home, her car stalled out in high water just a couple of miles away from her home.
“She did the right things. She called 911. She called her father, but it was just too much and too quick,” said Roberta Ramirez, Alyssa’s aunt.
Alyssa’s parents went to search for her but the water had already swept away her car.
“They weren’t able to find her until this morning when crews were out there. They were able to locate the vehicle, which wasn’t too far away,” Ramirez said.
Alyssa’s family says they can’t believe she is gone, but are relying on faith to get them through this tragedy.
“They rest assured that she was a very strong believer and she has her place in heaven and they’ll meet her again soon,” Ramirez said.
“She was a good person. She was always competitive,” Amber Contrerastold KABB.
Sadly, this is the fourth time in four years that Devine High School has lost a member of its graduating class.
