MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A mother and her adult son were killed in a house fire at 1979 Riegler Road in Muskegon Township. The father was seriously burned. The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Firefighters told FOX 17 News they believe the fire started in the basement, but the source of the fire will only become official with an investigation. The mother and son were in one room where they died.

The fathers official condition at the hospital has not been released.

Crews first encountered mostly smoke inside the home when they arrived, said Muskegon Township Fire Chief Dave Glotzbach. All three victims suffered from smoke inhalation.

The one smoke alarm, located in a hallway, was not going off.

The township has installed smoke detectors in more than 200 homes, said Chief Glotzbach, and the township has a grant to place up to 1,000 smoke detectors in homes.
