School district and business partnerships bring free meals, fun events to Wayland area this summer

WAYLAND, Mich. — Free meals will be provided to children 18 and under this summer, thanks to partnerships between Wayland Union Schools, local businesses, and local libraries.

Beginning the week of June 8, students will be able to participate in some fun, free events in the Wayland area.  Lunch will be served unless noted otherwise, which are free for kids and $4.00 for adults.

  • Monday, June 8 at 10:30am @ Wayland City Park, Great Start Playgroup- Free book for each family. For children age birth to 5, but older siblings are welcome to join! Lunch 11:15-11:45am
  • Tuesday, June 9 at 10:30am @ Steeby Elementary School, Paleo Joe- Explore the world of dinosaurs with author, paleontologist, and storyteller. First 100 kids get a free, autographed book by Paleo Joe! Lunch 11:30-12pm
  • Monday, June 15 @ Dorr Library. Cape Making; Join us for our Summer Reading Kickoff! Create your own superhero cape (all ages) and start creating your own superhero. Library hours are Noon-8pm, lunch 12:00-12:30pm
  • Tuesday, June 16 at 10am @ Steeby Elem. Henika Library is bringing Master Arts Story Theater with audience participation. Performing in the style of medieval street theater! Free books to first 100 students! Lunch 11:00-11:30am
  • Thursday, June 18 at 10am@ Steeby Elem. United Bank Plant Day! Pot your own flower, herb or vegetable and watch it grow all summer! Lunch 11:30-12pm
  • Tuesday, June 23 at 10am @ Henika Library. Water Wonders- hands on water science. Explore fun water and ice stations. Free water cannons to first 100 kids! Lunch 11:00-11:30am
  • Tuesday, June 30 at 10am @ Steeby Elem. Play prize bingo with your friends from Henika Library! Lunch 11:00-11:30am
  • Tuesday, July 7 at 10am @ Henika Library. Art Attack! Make it –take it, craft drop-in. Lunch 11:00-11:30am
  • Tuesday, July 14 at 10am @ Steeby Elem. Henika Library is bringing guests from the Kalamazoo Nature Center. Learn about natures “Super Heroes”! Lunch 11:00-11:30am
  • Tuesday, July 21 at 10am @ Steeby Elem. Bubble Science! Play and learn about bubbles! Brought to you by Henika Library and Great Start. First 100 kids get free bubbles! Lunch 11:00-11:30am.
  • Saturday, July 25th @ Dorr Library Super Hero Training Camp: Do you wonder how Batman or Spiderman get ready to take down the bad guys? Well, test your skills and learn some new ones at our Superhero Training Camp (capes and masks are encouraged). Library hours 10am-2:00pm Lunch 11:30-12pm
  • Saturday, August 1 @ Dorr Library Summer Reading Finale, Mini Comic Con; Come and show off your Superhero costume at our 2nd Annual Comic Con! We will have events all day including Superhero Duct Tape creations, Photo Booth, and visit with our special guests! Library hours 10am-2:00pm, Lunch 11:30-12pm
  • Tuesday, August 4 at 10am @ Steeby Elementary. Get Moving with Northern Physical Therapy for a fun family fitness event filled with activities and contests! Lunch 11:30-12:00pm
  • Monday, August 24 at 1pm @ Pine Street Elementary Gym. See a LIVE cheetah and join Mary Wykstra from the Action for Cheetahs in Kenya (ACK) There is a $2 suggested donation to benefit ACK. COOL crafts sale from Kenya will also be on display. Lunch 12:30-1pm @ Pine Street Cafeteria.
