GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A 61-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed early Monday morning, when he was struck by a vehicle in Grand Rapids.

It happened right around midnight at 28th Street and Englewood Ave SE.  Police say the victim, identified only as Earl Lee Rhodes, was unresponsive when they arrived.  Paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police say the driver, a 21-year-old, struck Rhodes while traveling westbound in a dark area of the roadway.  The driver had just left work and called 911 immediately.  Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

28th Street was closed until about 3:30 a.m. from Englewood to Breton Road.
