PORTAGE, Mich. -- A suspect is in custody after police say a woman was shot Wednesday morning in the 2900 block of French Bay Drive.

Police were called to the area at about 7:20 a.m. Wednesday after receiving reports of a woman in her mid-twenties laying in her driveway with what looked to be a gunshot wound.

The victim's condition is unknown at this time.

"I'm very disappointed that someone can come into this neighborhood, shoot a lady up the street and she's got a weapon in her hand," said Clarence Worden, a neighbor of the victim.

It was far from a normal day for Worden as he watched police arrest the suspect in the shooting of the young woman from down the street.

Police tell us that prior to the shooting, the suspect parked her SUV a few blocks from the scene, walked to the victims home on Old Mission Street, and shot the victim with a .22 caliber revolver.

Officials have located the gun and have identified the suspect as a white woman in her mid-40's.

Police don't have a concrete motive at this time, but do believe that the victim and suspect know each other.

They also add that this type of crime is very unusual for the area.

"It's a nice, quiet neighborhood. Certainly out of the ordinary, but for Portage, you know this is out of the ordinary for the entire city," said Nicolas Armold, the Deputy Chief of the Portage Police Department.

Not only was it unusual, it was something that Worden says needs to be stopped from happening again.

"I want the politicians to realize that maybe people are getting sick. Idiots with pistols and everything, going down the street and murdering people, it's time for it to stop and change the laws," Worden said.
