PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The wooden observation deck and stairs in Tunnel Park on Lake Michigan burned Friday morning. The fire was quickly put out, but now the question is how it happened or who is responsible?

Tunnel Park is a popular Ottawa County park on Lakeshore Drive, so named for the tunnel that runs under a dune to connect the park's parking and picnic area with the beach.

Boaters on Lake Michigan called Ottawa County Dispatch around 6:15 a.m. thinking they were reporting a grass fire.  The wooden staircase is a total loss.

Neighbors tell us that they heard fireworks late into the night, but officials say it is too early to blame fireworks for the destruction.

Park officials say that work to rebuild the stairs will begin Monday. Visitors to the park can still access the beach through the tunnel.  Most of the grass remains on the dune, so officials do not believe there is any risk of a slide.
