Flipped kayak drowns man in Newaygo

NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. — Early Sunday morning, a 26 year-old male was found dead in the water of Martin Lake.

Michigan State troopers learned that the 26 year-old was kayaking with his friend when both kayaks flipped over and filled with water.

The victim was unable to swim, and his friend was unable to bring him to shore.

The victim’s body was recovered with assistance by the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office dive team.

The incident is under investigation. Authorities say that they believe alcohol may have been a factor.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.
