WEST MICHIGAN — Thus far this summer has been somewhat on the cool side. Not a lot of heat or humidity, but that will change briefly on Monday! High temperatures across the area will likely end up between 85 and 90 degrees! Dew point temperatures, a measure of moisture in the air, will also climb in to the mid 60s making it feel a little sticky outdoors.

Moderate to high beach hazard risks have been posted for Monday afternoon and evening up and down the Lake Michigan shoreline, so swimming is not advised in these areas. We’ll also have SMALL CRAFT ADVISORIES posted for boaters for the afternoon/evening hours on Monday with waves building to about two to four feet from Grand Haven southward, three to five feet northward. See graphic below. The numbers that are next to each lakeshore city is the Lake Michigan water temperature at that particular location (valid Sunday morning). They are derived from the satellite.

As fate would have it, we will likely not be able to transition from the warm/sticky air mass to a cooler/drier air mass without the chance of some showers and thunderstorms. That said, a cold front approaching the state Monday night will bring (at least) the chance for some wide spread showers/storms through Tuesday morning. A few or these storms may be on the strong side, but most are not expected to be severe since the action will happen during the late night/early morning hours during what meteorologists refer to as “negative heating.”

Once the cold front blasts through Tuesday morning, look for a cooler, drier air mass to filter in for the remainder of the day and the next day or two afterwards with highs in the mid/upper 70s. Areas south/east of Grand Rapids will be the last to clear, probably by early/mid afternoon.

Looking out a bit further, next weekend may be a bit interesting. Recall that last year Grand Rapids never reached 90 degrees. Our forecast models are indicating (at least right now) that we could see increased heat and humidity and perhaps our first wide spread 90 degree temperatures next weekend. It would be the first in two years! Stay tuned to later forecasts!
