GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.,-- The Grand Rapids Police Department installed a new set of eyes in an area known to see a lot of foot traffic downtown.

Rosa Parks Circle is now home to a security camera, which was installed late last week.

The camera is just one of many downtown Grand Rapids and was paid from a grant the department received several years ago.

Authorities say having the equipment in place will help distribute manpower more efficiently.

"It`s there for a purpose and that`s an area that may need something like that forever because it is an area with a large amount of people but it provides an easy avenue of observing them without having seven officers standing there. It takes fewer bodies on the ground to monitor the area if one person can be looking at it remotely," said Lieutenant David Schnurstein.

Police say the equipment wasn't installed in response to one specific incident, but is there to aid in any kind of criminal activity that could take place.
