PORTLAND, Mich. — A 9-1-1 call reporting a triple homicide, prompting a large police response Sunday morning, proved to be false, according to Michigan State Police.

MSP troopers, as well as Portland officers and Ionia County deputies responded to a home just outside of Portland after receiving a call from a man saying he killed his girlfriend and her two children.

According to police, once officers arrived on scene they realized the people who live at the home were out of town. Everyone was eventually accounted for and found to be safe.

Police searched the home and found nothing.

Michigan State Police said the incident is a reminder of the seriousness of making false 911 calls because they can jeopardize the safety of law enforcement and when resources are tied up.

Authorities will continue to investigate this incident and seek criminal charges for those responsible.

Anyone with information regarding the false call is asked to contact the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post at 989-352-8444.
