GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Kent County Sheriff is investigating a series of thefts of outgoing mail from local businesses.

Kent County Sheriff Fraud Investigators say there have been at least eight reports of outgoing mail being stolen.  The thefts have been happening overnight and some have contained checks.  Several of the businesses involved have reported having their checks cashes or attempted to be cashed at banks and stores, both locally and out-of-state.  Stolen checks have also been counterfeited.

The businesses that have reported thefts have been in Byron Township, Algoma Township, Cascade Township and the city of Kentwood.

Investigators say that outgoing mail with checks or other personal or sensitive information should not be left in business mailbox, but be dropped off at the post office or in a post office receptacle.

Anyone with information on the thefts should contact their local police department or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
