GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids City Commission Tuesday authorized the city to start looking into solar power for the city’s waste water treatment plant.

City staff will begin negotiating with American Capital Energy  for long term power purchase and a land lease agreement for a solar facility at the former Butterworth Acres landfill.

The city expects the solar facility could help the city save $200,000 to $300,000 per year in electricity costs.  The solar facility would provide power to the Wastewater Treatment site, which is adjacent to the property.
