GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand River Restoration project received approval from the Grand Rapids City Commission and the plan’s visioning stage will begin the early stages of implementation.

The Grand River Restoration Steering Committee recommended to the commission Tuesday morning that the steering committee be renamed the Grand River Corridor Revitalization Committee and start working with the city and Grand Rapids Whitewater to start gathering philanthropic funding.

The committee also recommended that they begin exploring forming a “conservancy-like” organization to operate and maintain the improvements on and in the river and also a “recreational authority” to include other governmental jurisdictions up and down the river from Grand Rapids.

Mayor George Heartwell thanked the committee for playing a critical role in the river’s restoration.
