COMSTOCK PARK, Mich -- Mike Gerber was selected in the 15th round of the 2014 MLB draft and in his first full season of pro baseball is delivering in a big way.

“That was my goal, to turn some heads coming in especially this year I had a pretty good first short season and I wanted to kind of repeat that this year and I think I’ve been able to do that for the most part but we’ve still got some games to play and so I am still trying to finish the season strong” Gerber said.

Gerber currently leads the Midwest League in total bases, hits and games played and is 2nd in OPS, slugging percentage and triples.

“I’m just trying not to do too much at the plate we’re getting towards the end of the season trying to finish the season strong, keep putting in quality at-bats and putting good swings on balls and hopefully they’ll fall” Gerber added.

When you couple his age, 23, and his success this season, there is potential for a quicker rise through the farm system.

“It’s definitely put him on the map for the Detroit Tigers as a big-time prospect" Whitecaps manager Andrew Graham said.  "Left-hand hotter with power, hits for average, can steal some bases and play right field pretty well anything can happen, there is no reason next year he goes to spring training gets a little bigger stronger comes with the same approach he’s got a chance of making the double A team and skipping high A, it’s up to him from now on how he finishes this season and how he comes into spring training.”
