GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Three people, including a pregnant teenager, were shot after a large block party on the city's southwest side over the weekend.
Gunshots rang out just before 10 p.m. Saturday following an annual neighborhood block party that had taken place along Lafayette Avenue.
Event organizers expressed frustration that the violence came after something positive they were doing for the community. The block party committee is made up of 28 people, using money from their own pockets to put on the event in their neighborhood. It's grown consistently every year, with about 800 people participating on Saturday. Feelings of disappointment overwhelm the group as three people were left wounded and an added stigma plagues their event.
Sharon Rush is the president of the block party committee and spoke to FOX 17 NEWS on Monday.
"We are doing great things down here," said Rush. "Trying to do something positive and keep everyone together and when you put a stigma on us like that no one is going to want to come to it, we know what the outcome will be."
It's an event Rush has put on for nine years now.
Police in Grand Rapids aren't having much luck in terms of finding those responsible for the shootings. Officials said they aren't getting as much cooperation as they would hope for.
FOX 17 NEWS also talked with relatives of the pregnant 19-year-old shot Saturday. The victim's mother said she's recovering, but they're disappointed someone would try and take people's lives at a community event.
Authorities are asking anybody who knows anything about the shootings to call the Grand Rapids Police Department or Silent Observer.
