GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — After five shootings in the last week in Grand Rapids, police are ramping up patrols in areas where the shootings took place.

On Wednesday, we were able to ride along with a Grand Rapids Police officer who knows these streets well. He's Sgt. Chip Ware with the south service area patrol, and he has been with GRPD for 25 years. He gives us an inside look at what officers are dealing with and how they plan to keep Grand Rapids safe.

The latest victim was Marquaan Crosby, 17, who was shot and killed early Wednesday morning. His friends are frightened by the recent streak of violence. There was a vigil for Crosby on Wednesday night at the site of his shooting -- Marshall Avenue and Adams Street -- where about 100 people set up bears, balloons, and a sign that people could write messages on to remember the youth.

Crosby's mother was too distraught to stay at the vigil very long. She expressed sadness and anger that so many others who knew the teenager are feeling.

If you know anything about this latest killing or any of the other shootings, call the Grand Rapids Police Department or Silent Observer.
