5-year-old fighting leukemia issues challenge to Crayola

Posted

GRANDVILLE, Mich., -- Dawson Babiak loves to draw and create art with anything Crayola. The 5-year-old, who was diagnosed with leukemia last November, recently made a huge donation of Crayola products to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

"We wanted to do something to help others," explained Alison Babiak, Dawson's mother. "We decided to do the 'Crayola Challenge' and put it out there on our Facebook page."

The challenge asked supporters to donate Crayolaproducts, to not only raise awareness of pediatric cancer, but to benefit the young cancer fighters at DeVos Children's Hospital.

"It was just a huge outpouring of support," explained Jason Babiak, Dawson's dad. "We stuffed 20 boxes...approximately $5,000 dollars worth of Crayola products. It was amazing."

Dawson and his parents dropped off more than 1,000 Crayola products to the hospital in July. They are hoping Dawson's Crayola Challenge story will go viral, and attract the attention of Crayola. They'd like to see the company match Dawson's donation.

"It'd just be nice for them to recognize what he's done, and if in any way they can support the hospital, the Helen DeVos Children's Foundation, that would be incredible," Alison told FOX 17 News.

Several of the family's friends have submitted letters to Crayola. The Babiaks have also written a letter, but have yet to receive a response.

"We'll see what happens. We hope Crayola steps up, and says we'd like to help out," said Jason.

Either way, the family hopes to make the Crayola Challenge an annual event.

Meantime, Dawson continues to create as he undergoes chemotherapy. His parents said the treatment appears to be working.

Dawson is set to begin Kindergarten this fall.
