GRPD Segway

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Two Grand Rapids police officers will begin patrolling neighborhoods on Segways, in hopes of increasing visibility around the city.

The Segways go up to 15 miles per hour, so officers can respond faster than if they were on foot.

The cost of the Segways was about $25,000 and that came from drug funds and a grant from Downtown Grand Rapids, Inc.

Officers were on the Segways Friday night at the final Movies in the Park event.

Where is the increase in insurance premiums going to come from? In MI, three wheeled vehicles carry a 50% hike in premiums because of their “inherent instability”. (Note that motorcycles, which only have two wheels, are not subject to that 50% premium hike.) These three-wheelers will therefore cost 50% more than a traditional Segway to insure. I understand the vehicles themselves were paid for by the drug funds and the DGR grant, but where is the extra insurance money going to come from?

Insurance on a pile of junk, you must be crazy. What kind of idiot would insure one of these piles of crap? The cops should just lite a couple stacks of $100 bills on fire. Not to mention I can’t wait to the article in the paper saying Officer on electric scooter thing hits POTHOLE AND BREAKS NECK……

And we have a deputy chief getting paid to ride around the office on a damn motor scooter. Why again do we have 3 chiefs and not enough Indians? Just askin! And no offense to any nationality here, just a figure of speech.
