Weekend road work includes I-196 lane closures … again

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — For weeks now, weekend drivers have experienced long backups on I-196 for road and bridge repairs. This weekend, the schedule has long closures both eastbound and westbound.

Eastbound I-196 will see one lane closed from the Chicago Drive exit at mile 72 to Market Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday until no later than 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 24). Expect backups during peak hours.

Westbound I-196 will have a single lane closed at 28th Street as repairs continue on the bridge from 10 p.m. Friday until noon on Monday. Note the extension of the lane closure scheduled into the workday on Monday.

There are other closures of note over the weekend:

I-96 westbound in Portland

  • I-96 westbound lane closure from Knox Road to Sunfish Highway from 9 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 23)

I-96 at Alpine Avenue

  • There will be brief, five-minute long closures on the ramps at the interchange at Alpine Avenue Sunday between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. for utility work.

M-89 in Otsego

  • The intersection of M-89 at Farmer Street will be closed Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. for replacement of traffic signal poles.
