BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- A 48-year-old man has died following a plane crash at W.K. Kellogg Airport on Thursday.

The Calhoun County Sheriff's  Office said the call came in around 8:20 p.m. and confirms one person has died. Officials on scene say it was an experimental aircraft  that crashed with a pilot on board.

The pilot has been identified as William Carlson Perguson II.  Battle Creek City officials say the small plane was experiencing some sort of problem and he attempted to land it.

On his second landing attempt, officials say Perguson crashed into a grass field and the plane caught on fire.   No other injuries were reported.

The Western Michigan College of Aviation is located near the crash site. College officials reached out to us Thursday night and said the crash involves no one from the college.
