ALLENDALE, Mich. – Consumers Energy and Grand Valley State University broke ground Friday on Michigan’s largest community solar panel project.

The solar garden project is designed to provide energy at a more affordable cost.  Over 17 acres of land in the southwest portion of GVSU’s campus will hold about 11,000 solar panels.  It will produce three mega-watts of energy, which is slightly more than a wind turbine.

Customers will be able to subscribes for “half-a-kilowatt”, with flexible monthly payments for three, seven or 25 years.  Customers can also receive credit based on the amount of solar energy produced.

Consumers Energy plans to finish the project and begin operations in the spring of 2016.

A second solar garden is planned for Kalamazoo.
