EATON COUNTY, Mich. – One person died in a series of crashes Sunday evening on I-96.

Sharon Schafer, 46, of Grand Ledge, died in a chain reaction crash on westbound I-96 that happened about 7:15pm near Saginaw Highway.  Traffic was backed up due to an earlier crash in Clinton County, when the driver of a Ford pickup truck plowed into the rear of another vehicle that was stopped.  The crash impacted another four vehicles.  Schafer was the driver in one of the vehicles in the chain reaction.

Three others were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Westbound I-96 was closed until about 2:00am.
