COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 93-year-old driver and his 92-year-old wife sustained serious injuries Sunday afternoon when their vehicle hit a concrete barrier, went airborne, and then landed in traffic before being hit by an oncoming truck.

The couple was entering a construction zone on westbound I-94 just east of Sprinkle Road around 5:45 Sunday evening when the driver failed to merge left, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department.

The car hit a concrete barrier, went airborne and landed back in traffic lanes, police said.

An pickup truck then hit the couple’s car and sent it into a concrete median barrier where it bounced off before coming to a stop against the barrier.

Four people inside the pickup truck, who were from Illinois, were not injured, according to authorities.

The Paw Paw man and his wife were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Their current conditions are unknown.
