GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Police are conducting a thorough investigation after one of their cruisers was struck by gunfire early Wednesday morning.

It happened at around 3:30 a.m. at the Grand Coney restaurant located at Michigan and Eastern NE.   Police at the scene tell us the cruiser was parked while officers were on lunch and no one was in the vehicle when it was struck.  When officers returned to the cruiser, they noticed a bullet hole in the rear passenger-side window.  The bullet lodged near the rear hatch.  Officers say they did not hear the shot and no one called police to report shots fired in the area.

Police have spent the early-morning hours combing the area with multiple officers and K-9 units, searching for any evidence of where the bullet came from.  Their investigation included a meticulous search of a multi-story building that is near the scene.  At this time, there have been no shell casings located.

"The fact that an individual would fire a gun into a police car is disturbing," said Sgt. Terry Dixon in a press release.

Anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious is asked to call Grand Rapids Police at 616-456-3406 or anonymously contact Silent Observer.
