MUSKEGON, Mich — Muskegon senior Mardrekia Cook signed her national letter of intent to play basketball at Michigan State on Wednesday in a ceremony at Muskegon High School.

“It is very exciting, overwhelming, a blessing, I thank my teammates” Cook said, “I’m really happy right now.”

Cook will begin her fourth year on varsity for the Big Reds this winter and said it did not take her long to decide that Michigan State will be the place for her.

“Watching them and being on campus they are so family oriented so when I went there I just automatically knew that was the place for me to be” she said.

Cook is the next in a long line of Muskegon basketball players to go on to play major college basketball joining recent graduates Deshaun Thrower (Stony Brook) and Deyonta Davis (Michigan State).

“It’s just beautiful to see four or six go D1 and I’m the first girl so hopefully the younger girls look up to me and they want to do the same thing later on in life” Cook said.

The Muskegon basketball team began practice this week and opens the season December 3rd against Kent City.
