GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The City of Grand Rapids has a new special designation.

The city officially became a 2030 District at a signing ceremony Monday.  It means the city has established a district to reduce its energy use in the downtown area.

Grand Rapids is the 11th city in the nation to become a 2030 District and the first in Michigan.  A special council will work to make sure buildings are receiving energy efficient upgrades.  The City Commission is expected to vote Tuesday to approve a $9.3 million effort to outfit thousands of street lamps with LED lights.

Other 2030 District cities include Cleveland, Seattle, Los Angeles and Denver.
