MIDDLEVILLE, Mich. – Does our warm December have you down because you can’t go ice skating? You may want to head to Middleville.

Public Works employees began installing what is believed to be one of the only synthetic ice rinks in West Michigan. The crews are expected to be done by the end of Monday and the rink should be open to skating this weekend.

The rink is made of a plastic polymer that is infused with an enhancer, which allows regular ice skates to glide easily across the surface.  The surface is about a half-inch thick and was installed like a jigsaw puzzle.

The rink is under a pavilion off East Main and Railroad Street.  Visitors will have to bring their own skates.

The village is officially opening the site during the Holly Trolley Christmas event on December 21.
