LANSING, Mich. – Soon-to-be-former Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell will have a new position in the new year.

Gov. Rick Snyder appointed Heartwell to the State Transportation Commission Wednesday. The commission is a six-member board for making policy for all state transportation programs.  No more than three members can be from the same political party.

Lynn Afendoulis of Grand Rapids is also on the commission.

The term is for three years and must be consented by the Senate.

Heartwell’s term as Grand Rapids mayor ends at the end of 2015.

Appointing Heartwell to a transportation committee is like appointing Kwame Kilpatrick to an ethics commission. Aren’t you supposed to have demonstrated **positive** experience with something before you get an appointment to a commission on it? Spending $40 million on an unecessary bus line that is losing $2 million a year while handicapping local businesses hardly constitutes positive experience in the transportation arena.

Cronyism at its “Pure Michigan” finest. And people wonder why it is so hard to attract out-state business here???
