GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Authorities in Grand Rapids are looking for homeless people who need transportation to shelter during a severe storm that was expected to bring ice, freezing rain and high winds to western Michigan and other parts of the state.

Grand Rapids police officers were conducting sweeps of the city's downtown and west side for people living outdoors and who might be at risk.

The storm also was expected to bring heavy wet snow to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Winter storm warnings and advisories have been issued for a number of areas.

Gov. Rick Snyder on Monday activated the state's Emergency Operations Center which coordinates response and recovery efforts by state and local agencies.

State offices in the Lower Peninsula were closed by Monday afternoon.
