FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Lawyers for a Texas teen who cited “affluenza” as a defense in a deadly drunken-driving wreck may be attempting to stall deportation to the United States by claiming that Mexican authorities violated his human rights.
Legal experts say Ethan Couch could argue that there was a flaw in his detention by Mexican immigration authorities.
Couch and his mother are believed to have fled to Mexico after a video surfaced in November that appears to show the 18-year-old at a party where people were drinking, which would be a violation of his probation. They were arrested Monday after using a phone to order pizza that was traced to a condominium complex in Puerto Vallarta.
Tonya Couch was deported to the United States Thursday. Her son is being held in Mexico City.
