Man walking around with stolen gun arrested over night

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A man is in police custody Friday morning after he was spotted carrying a gun around in a public area.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded at 3:45 a.m. this morning to the area near West Patterson Street  and Woodward Avenue on reports of a large crowd gathering.  As the officers were arriving on scene, calls began coming in to police dispatch about shots being fired in the area.

Shortly after officers began investigating on scene, a man was spotted carrying a gun in his hand and then sticking it into his pocket.

Once the suspect saw the officers, he reportedly attempted to run. Officers say he ditched the gun as he fled.

The suspect was eventually caught and taken in to custody.

A loaded semi-automatic handgun was recovered by police and later found to be stolen.
