GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – If getting involved in city government is on your list for 2016, the City of Grand Rapids has an opening.

With 2nd Ward Commissioner Rosalynn Bliss now being Grand Rapids’ mayor, City Clerk Darlene O’Neal is now taking applications to fill the seat of the 2nd Ward representative.

To apply, you must be a registered voter and be a resident of the 2nd Ward.  The 2nd Ward consists of most of the northeast side of Grand Rapids.(Click here for a ward map.)  Applicants are also required to fill out an Income Tax Clearance Application with the city’s Income Tax Department.

The clerk will post a list of applicants on January 19 and will hold 30-minute interviews with each candidate during a January 26 City Commission meeting.  The top candidates after that interview will be invited to a Town Hall on February 1st at 7:00pm.  After that, the city will hold a public hearing on February 9 to allow the public to speak about the candidates and the vacancy.  Then, the top candidates will be interviewed on February 16 at a special City Commission meeting.

The process ends on February 23rd as the commission debates and votes on the appointment to the commissioner’s position.  The new commissioner will be sworn in at that meeting.
