Detroit Auto Show opens to public

DETROIT (AP) – The North American Auto Show is opening to the public following a week of previews for the media, industry officials and others.

The latest cars and trucks are being displayed at Cobo Center in Detroit along with concept cars that offer a glimpse at what the future of driving might look like.

Public days start Saturday.

With stricter fuel economy standards looming, automakers continue to develop alternatives to gas-powered cars. Audi and Lexus both showed zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell prototypes. Volkswagen showed a plug-in hybrid Tiguan SUV concept.

Fiat Chrysler’s plug-in hybrid version of the Pacifica is a first for the minivan segment. Chevrolet showed the all-electric Bolt. And Ford showed updated versions of its Fusion hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars.

The Detroit Auto Show ends on January 24.
