GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Employees Union is lending a helping hand to Flint in the midst of the critical water crisis.

According to one organizer, 1,062 cases of bottled water and 371 five gallon containers of water were donated Saturday.

From 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. volunteers held a water drive at GREIU Union Hall located at 917 Bridge Street NW in Grand Rapids.

Members of the GREIU are accepting donations of bottled water to help Flint residents that do not have safe water to drink, cook, or even bathe in.

Flint's tap water became contaminated with lead after the city switched water supplies in 2014 while a new pipeline was under construction. Corrosive water leached lead from old pipes.
