The creators of the hit Netflix documentary series ‘Making a Murderer’ say they have been in contact with convicted killer and series subject, Steven Avery, and are already “looking into future episodes.”

Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi are the co-creators of the series, which has made national headlines since premiering on Netflix’s streaming service several weeks ago.  Speaking to reporters, they said they are gathering new materials to continue Steven Avery’s story, but there would have to be “significant developments” to actually begin production on a followup season/series.

“I think today marks four weeks since the series launched and what we’ve managed to do in the past four weeks is have several phone calls with Steven Avery which we have recorded with an eye toward including them in future episodes,” said Ricciardi. “We have not returned to Wisconsin in the past four weeks.”

“As we said before, in relation to this story, this story is ongoing, these cases are open,” said Demos. “It’s real-life so you don’t know what’s going to happen.  We are ready to follow these. If there are significant developments, we’ll be there.”

The comments from Demos and Ricciardi follow statements from Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, who said the story is still unfolding, and “we’ll certainly take a look at it.”

Steven Avery is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, in the murder of Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.  His nephew, Brendan Dassey, is also in prison for the murder.

‘Making a Murderer’ focuses on what many say are questionable tactics by law enforcement and prosecutors in the Halbach murder investigation.  The creators of the series have recently come under fire for failing to include pieces of evidence, but they defend the series and stand behind its credibility.
