COOPERSVILLE, Mich. – A man is jail after allegedly assaulting his estranged wife and abducting his 16-month old daughter.

The incident happened about 5:30 Monday morning in Coopersville.

Ottawa County Deputies were call to the residence in the 100 block of Main Street by a 24-year-old woman. She told them that her estranged husband had broken in to her apartment and tried to strangle her.  She was able to get away, but the man, a 34-year-old who had just recently moved to Sparta, left with the couple’s 16-month-old daughter.

Authorities were in the process of generating an Amber Alert when Kent County Sheriff’s Deputies checked an address in the 9000 block of North Division in Sparta.  They found the suspect and the child at that location. The child was not harmed and the man was taken into custody.

Ottawa County investigators say that the woman had gotten a Personal Protection Order against the suspect about a week ago.

The woman is being treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

Formal charges are expected later Monday.
