Tow truck drivers offer perspective on snowy and icy roads

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. - There have a been a lot of accidents on West Michigan roadways today. Besides police and rescue crews, the busiest people out on the roads today have been tow truck drivers.

FOX 17 spent much of the day with Eagle Towing of Muskegon. They tell us that Sunday was actually worse.

They also tell us the #1 reason for any crash out there today was drivers going too fast for conditions.  Even if you are just going 20 mph, slowing down more can often help.

They also want people to be aware of tow trucks and emergency crews responding to crashes, so more people don't get hurt along the highways.

    Informing the road commissions and media on the SCIENCE behind salting roads wouldn’t hurt either. The SCIENCE is this:
    Salt (and the other chemicals they use to melt ice on roads) works all the way down to -10F. When you hear the media and the road commission say that it stops working at 15 degrees or 10 degrees…that is simply not true.
    Yes, it works a little more slowly below 10 degrees, so you need to use more of it to see the same effects, but it DOES work at those lower temps. The reason they say it does not is simply to save money by not putting it down at all instead of putting it down more thickly.

    We pay our taxes for many reasons. One of those reasons is to insure that our roads are kept safe to drive on. I have no problem with a road commission which tries and fails. But a road commission which does NOTHING based on a deliberate LIE is something that I have a problem with. They have an obligation to do what they can, and to not drop salt on icy roads AT ANY TEMPERATURE is ultimately taxation without representation. We are paying for something that we are not getting. In addition, the fact that damage and injuries, and deaths are occurring as a result makes it criminal negligence.

    Road commissions need to step up and do their duty. They need to stop lying to the public and to the media. If they are constrained in doing their jobs because of money they need to be up front about it and take that to the public for support. Otherwise they need to drop salt on every road that is icy, every time.

    The media needs to do their duty too. Research what you are told before printing it. Science is fact, and that is what news is supposed to be concerned with. The scientific fact is that road salt and the other chemicals that are sued to melt ice off streets works down to 10 below zero. It just works more slowly and requires greater concentrations. When someone tells you otherwise, call them on it in your articles. SERVE THE PUBLIC, or lose the opportunity to do so.

    Your video makes a great point about how it is important to reduce your speed in icy and snowy conditions. It is also important to make sure that you give tow trucks and emergency response service teams space to avoid making an accident worse, just like you mentioned. It can also help to minimize any distractions while you are driving in winter conditions to make sure that you stay safe. Avoid eating, using a mobile device, or other distractions to be safe.
