Good morning! It seems like every other day for the last several days, there has been some sort of watch, warning, or advisory in place in regards to snowfall. While that hasn’t exactly been the case, snow has certainly been falling at a more rapid clip than it did to start our winter season.
Many areas saw a light snowfall this morning less than an inch. Different from yesterday, this snowfall to begin this morning was not lake effect snow. A disturbance passing to our south clipped us on the northern fringes this morning, providing many areas in West Michigan with some lighter snowfall this morning. However, areas along the lakeshore saw their snowfall enhanced due to the lake effect. This provided many areas from Hart to Muskegon to Grand Haven with quite a bit of snow this morning.
Preliminary snow totals as of 9:20 AM show the heaviest accumulation in Hart so far of just over 3 inches. As totals roll in, we’ll continue to share them with you.
This lines up with our forecast from last night and this morning, as the lake effect enhanced bands of snow have really made a difference in the snowfall totals this morning. Many of you are tired of the snowfall. “When will it end?” you may ask. Sooner than later…and we’ll also “warm” up a bit as well.
“Feels like” temperatures as of 9 AM are still incredibly cold. They’ll get better in the coming days, as this frigid air mass finally moves off to the east.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in place until 1 PM today. Only three counties are under the advisory because the heavier snowfall totals are taking place/expected in these counties through early afternoon.
For the remainder of the day, snow showers will linger for the first half of your day, even into the afternoon a bit. We’ll see breaks in the clouds by the afternoon, even though there may be a stray flurry.
After this storm clears out, we’ll have several days of clear weather. Temps will go from cold to chilly, as highs are expected in the 30s. One thing you’ll hear in the headlines and might want to give your friends and family a shout about, is a potentially larger winter storm for the northeast. It’s still early to talk about totals, but strong winds and blowing snow look to create hazardous travel and coastal flooding. Keep this in mind if you have a flight or plans to travel in the coming days.
Back on the homefront leading up to the weekend? Slow moderation in temperatures in the afternoon (mornings are still chilly.) It also won’t be as grey in the afternoon, with more sunshine expected over the coming days. Slick spots will still be possible, even without active precip.
