DETROIT — While no official word has come down, Detroit Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson says he plans to retire before the 2016 season, according to a published report from ESPN.

Johnson had apparently told his family that 2015 would be his final season, according to ESPN, which reported the news Sunday evening.

ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, attributing his information to unidentified sources, says Johnson also told coach Jim Caldwell about his retirement plans.

“Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future,” Johnson said in a statement that had been issued by the team at the end of this season earlier this month. ” I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future.”

The Detroit Lions released a statement late Sunday: “Regarding today’s ESPN report, we stand by our statement issued on Jan. 6 regarding Calvin.”
